Six Easy Ways to Clean Junk Files from Your PC - A Simple and Safe Guide

Over time, your Windows computer collects a lot of digital clutter: temporary files, old updates, leftover programs, and downloads you probably haven’t thought about for half a decade. This junk takes up valuable space, can slow things down, and can lead to those restless moments where you just want the dang thing to hurry up and load when there’s a deadline coming up. The good news: Windows’ built in tools offer an easy, cost-free, safe, and effective way to get your computer back up to its previous speed (and free up some storage along the way).

If you want an easy, step-by-step guide to cleaning out your PC’s closet, just take a look below.

1. Easiest Tools First: Storage Settings

This is the simplest way for most people, especially on Windows 10 or 11.

  1. Open Settings (press Windows key + I).

  2. Go to System > Storage.

  3. Click Cleanup recommendations (or Temporary files).

You’ll see few categories, such as:

  • Temporary files

  • Recycle Bin

  • Old Windows updates

  • Large or unused apps

Go through each category, check the boxes for anything you’re ready to part ways with, and click Clean up. It’s completely safe, and Windows tells you exactly how much space you’ll free up.

Bonus: Turn on Storage Sense

In the same Storage menu, switch Storage Sense on. This feature automatically cleans temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin when it gets full, and removes old downloads. You can even choose when you want it to run, whether that be every day, every week, or just whenever space is starting to get low. It’s like having a Roomba for your PC

2. Use Disk Cleanup for Deeper Cleaning

This classic tool is great for removing bigger system junk, and is only a bit more complicated then going through Storage Settings. We’d recommend going through Storage Settings first, and then doing this if you feel you could still get a little bit more speed and free space in your computer.

  1. Open your Start Menu, type “Disk Cleanup,” and open it. (Note that for full access, you’ll need to run this as an administrator. To do this, right-click Disk Cleanup and run it as administrator.

  2. Choose your main drive (usually C:) and click OK.

  3. Select items like Temporary files, Recycle Bin, and Downloads.

  4. Click Clean up system files (this unlocks even more space, such as old Windows update files).

  5. Pick what you want to delete and confirm. Simple as that!

3. Quickly Delete Temporary Files Manually

Temporary files are any files that your operating system or applications creates to hold data while you work. While it’s not advisable to delete the files from any application you're currently using since it can corrupt unsaved work or crash the application, it’s a good way to free up some extra space.

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run box.

  2. Type %temp% and press Enter.

  3. Select all files (Ctrl + A) and delete them (use Shift + Delete to skip the Recycle Bin). Skip any files that say they’re in use.

You can also do this for the main Windows Temp folder by typing temp in the Run box. These are mostly safe leftovers from programs and updates.

4. Remove Programs You Don’t Use

This one is pretty simple. With the storage capacity on modern computers, it’s easy to forget just how many things we’ve downloaded that we don't use anymore. Over the years, these apps, files, and downloads can start to clog things up.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

  2. Sort by size or install date.

  3. Click on anything you no longer need ( an old game, trial software, or an unused tool) and uninstall it.

This is one of the fastest ways to free up serious space.

5. Quick and Easy Ways to Get Some Space

  1. Empty the Recycle Bin: Right-click the Recycle Bin icon and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

  2. Clear browser junk: In Chrome or Edge, go to settings and clear your cache.

  3. Check your Downloads folder: Delete old installers and files you don’t need.

6. Find Big Space-Hogging Files

  1. Open File Explorer and go to your C: drive.

  2. In the search box, type something like size:>1GB to find giant files. This will allow you to take out the big stuff first, assuming you feel comfortable getting rid of it.

Extra Tips for Even More Space

  1. After a big Windows update, look for a folder called Windows.old and remove it through Disk Cleanup or Storage settings.

  2. Many services offer cloud storage up to a certain point for free. OneDrive, GoogleDrive, iCloud, and Mega are all options that can help you store  photos, videos, and other potentially large files in a place that won’t clog up your hard drive.

  3. Modern Windows handles SSD maintenance automatically, so don’t over-worry about “optimizing” SSDs.

Last Notes

  1. Stick to Windows built-in tools, or do bit research before using any outside application to make sure they’re above board. Avoid random “PC cleaner” programs advertised online — many are unnecessary or even harmful.

  2. Always back up important files before a big cleanup just in case, or put them on a cloud based storage system.

  3. Restart your computer after cleaning to let everything settle.

How much space can you get back?

Many people reclaim 5–30 GB or more with these steps, especially if they haven’t cleaned their computer in a while. Start with Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup — you’ll often see great results right away.

Your PC will feel faster and have more room for the things that matter. Happy cleaning!
